If your upload is rejected, one of these is usually the reason.

  • Upload rejected — file size too large

    What you see

    The portal displays "File size exceeds the allowed limit" or the upload button spins indefinitely.

    How to fix it

  • Photo rejected — wrong dimensions

    What you see

    The portal shows "Invalid photo dimensions" or "Photo does not meet size requirements".

  • Format not accepted — only JPEG allowed

    Portal shows "Only JPEG/JPG format accepted" even though your photo looks fine.

  • Background rejected — not white

    What you see

    The portal flags the photo for "incorrect background colour" or the automated check fails.

    How to fix it

    This tool cannot change the background of your photo. Retake your photo in front of a plain white or off-white wall in good lighting. Then re-process through this tool.

  • Photo rejected — too old

    What you see

Frequently asked questions

What photo size does UPSC require?
UPSC requires a passport-size photo of 3.5x4.5 cm (413x531 pixels at 300 DPI), in JPEG format and under 300 KB. This applies to Civil Services, NDA, CDS, and CAPF applications.
What background is required for a UPSC exam photo?
A plain white or light-coloured background is required. The face must be clearly visible with a neutral expression. Sunglasses, caps, and heavy shadow are not allowed.
Is the UPSC photo size the same as GPSC?
The pixel dimensions are the same (413x531 px), but GPSC allows only up to 200 KB while UPSC allows 300 KB. Use GPSC Photo for GPSC applications.
Do I also need to resize my signature for UPSC?
Yes. UPSC requires a separate signature image at 140x60 pixels, under 20 KB. Use Signature 20KB to prepare it alongside the photo.
Can I use this photo for multiple UPSC exams?
Yes. A single properly processed photo works for all UPSC exams (CSE, NDA, CDS, CAPF) as long as the photo is recent (taken within the last 6 months).
