Requirements
Digital Signature Requirements (20 KB)
UPSC, GPSC, NDA, SSC, and most Indian competitive exam portals require a scanned signature at 140 x 60 px, JPEG, under 20 KB. The signature must be on a plain white background with dark ink.
- Dimensions
- 140 × 60 px
- Format
- JPEG
- Max file size
- 20 KB
- Resolution
- 96 DPI
- Background
- Plain white paper only. No ruled lines, grids, or coloured paper.
Additional requirements
- Use a blue or black ink pen. The contrast between dark ink and white paper is what keeps the signature legible after compression.
- Crop tightly around your signature, leaving about 10 mm of white border on each side.
- A 200 DPI scan works well. If photographing, use natural light and a flat, steady surface.
- Check that there are no ruled lines, dots, or stray marks from the paper visible in the background.
- The signature you upload must match the one you write on paper at the exam centre. Use your standard, consistent signature.

Troubleshooting
Common issues & fixes
If your upload is rejected, one of these is usually the reason.
Signature file exceeds size limit
What you see
Portal shows "Signature file size must be under 20 KB" or similar.
How to fix it
This tool automatically compresses your signature to under 20 KB. Re-process and download again.
Background not white or off-white
What you see
Portal rejects the signature or the preview shows a coloured/dark background.
How to fix it
Sign on a clean sheet of plain white paper. Avoid ruled notebooks or coloured paper. Photograph in bright, even lighting (no shadows over the signature).
Signature is too faint or not legible
What you see
Automated check flags "Signature not detected" or the scanned signature is barely visible.
How to fix it
Use a black or dark blue ball-point or gel pen. Avoid felt-tip pens that bleed. Make sure lighting is even and there are no shadows across the signature.
Signature dimensions rejected
What you see
Portal shows "Signature must be 140 × 60 pixels" or similar dimension error.
How to fix it
This tool resizes your signature image to exactly 140 × 60 pixels. Use the processed download, not your original scanned file.
Lines or marks around the signature
What you see
The portal or verifier flags "Signature contains ruled lines or marks".
How to fix it
Sign on blank white paper, not on a ruled or printed page. Leave at least 1 cm of blank white space on all sides of your signature before scanning or photographing.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the signature size required for UPSC application?
- UPSC requires a scanned signature in JPEG format, 140×60 pixels, between 4 KB and 30 KB (we target under 20 KB to stay well within both limits).
- What is the signature size for GPSC exam forms?
- GPSC requires a digital signature of 140x60 pixels in JPEG format, under 20 KB. The same specification as UPSC. This tool works for both.
- My signature background is coloured. Will the tool handle it?
- Yes, but for best results scan your signature on white paper. A transparent PNG background is converted to white automatically.
- I also need to upload a photo for my application. What should I use?
- Use UPSC Photo for UPSC applications or GPSC Photo for GPSC. Both apply the correct exam photo dimensions.
